One day we would live in a global village, technology would connect people from everywhere.

Oxymoron, global is big but village is small. Can connect like they were in the same village. Connect with others with same interests.

However, he also said if we are interconnected with each other, we have a tribal mentality with an in and out group, you scrutinise people and become part of a club, leads to bullying and exclusion, can discriminate. Social media also does this.

Advantages of living in a global village:

Fandom theory

Can communicate with others from the other side of the world

Can make money easier because more followers for influencers

Different people can collaborate across the world on media products

Can have debates and learn about other opinions



Disadvantages of living in a global village:

Bullying

Fake news, moral panics

Scams and fraud

political disagreements

Fixating on other peoples opinions- Trolling, cyberbullying

Grooming, children can access all services



This advantages and disadvantages: 

Rich people, big companies because they can reach more audiences

cancel culture like for celebs

The poor, those who can't afford it or doesn't exist- Digital divide of technology rich and poor countries


Web Utopianism- The idea that the internet is great, brought a free society, debate, everyone is nice, making money, democratic, decentralised.
