LO2: Positives Of Social Media And Globalisation
Positives:
- Connectivity of ideas an people- Breaking down geographical boundaries professionally and personally. Professionally, you can crowd source by finding a company online, industry chats and forums. Like Yapster at Next. Personally, connecting fan cultures on fan forums globally. Yapster and LinkedIn professionally. Personally you could use Facebook/Instagram fan groups, or forums like https://www.fanforum.com/f483/ for Stranger Things.
- Sharing of technolgy innovation- Move technologies into different countries such as Teams (links to Web Eutopianism Web Utopianism- The idea that the internet is great, brought a free society, debate, everyone is nice, making money, democratic, decentralised.)
- Financing personnel (crowd sourcing when we ask for money from general public) and generation of funding (crowd fuunding, use internet to hire people)- Websites such as KickStarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/) and GoFundMe (https://www.gofundme.com/en-gb/discover) that allows people to donate money for a project (item) and gain rewards for it like shares. OUYA and Coolest Coolerare examples of famous Kickstarter campaigns. With GoFundMe lots of people get donations for treatment or to help with a world issue.
Davod Gauntlett- Web Eutopian (2007)
Web
eutopians believe social media and web 2.0 allow societies to come
together to promote social good or the eutopian ideal. He believed
geographical boundaries are nonexistant now thanks to social media and
connectivity. This doesn't take into account technology rich and poor
countries however.
Connectivity of ideas:
- Digital Trendsetting (vloggers, influencers, twitter, Instagram)
- Collaborative production (cloud 9)
- Online UGC Content (Sound Cloud)
- Video Games (e-Sports)
- Virtual Environments (Second Life)
- Tutorials (YouTube)
My Examples of those above, how can they be applied to a web-utopian ideals and why
- Digital Trendsetting- Selena Gomez. She promotes positive body image on her Instagram.
- Collaborative Production- Teams?
- Online UGC- TikTok or YouTube
- Video Games- Roblox. You can socialise with others and create your own world
- Virtual Environments- Second life or IMVU. You can make real shops and buy items with real money. You can also socialise with others and create your own home.
- Tutorials- Skillshare. They let you learn lots of new skills if you pay for their subscription. This is socially good since it is educational and can lead the way to jobs.
Sharing Of Technology
Howard Rheingold (1991) foreshadowed the sharing ot tech, software, ideas and content and termed the phrase electronic agora. This describes online meeting places (forms and chatrooms) where people can talk and collaborate.
Examples of online forums where people can share technology and ideas
Some examples are Second Life, IMVU, Steam, Discord, Reddit, Quora, twitter, Amino..... They can be applied to web eutopian ideas since they can give others advice, socialise about their hobbies.
Generation of funding and personnel
The crowdfunding projects don't have to be media products, like TV programmes, musi, films, mussic and video games, as all kind of products can be funded.
This enables normal people not backed by big businesses to be able to gain funds to create new and interesting projects. Thanks to social media this can be on a worldwide platform.
Crowdsourcing- A sourcing model in which individuals or organisations obtain personnel and to collab on projects. Crowdsourcing arreacts people over the internet and divide work between participants to reach the end goal.
Three places where you can crowd source for a project: KickStarter, openideo, Innocentive, chooser
