Media is largely a cultural product and this transfer of such a product is likely to have an influence on the recipient's culture. increasingly, technology has also been propelling globalisation.
Wikinomics (Topscott and Williams 2006, )-
Wikinomics- Way in which the internet has changed who and how people and businesses can make money. 2006 theory by Tap Scott, Williams, internet has revolutionised economy of the world. Influencers, Tiktok stars, YouTubers.
Web Utopianism- The idea that the internet is great, brought a free society, debate, everyone is nice, making money, democratic, decentralised.Cultural Imperialism- When western companies bring their companies into other countries.
Prosumer- Makes own material to put out online
Consumer- Consumes media products
Global Village Theory (Marshall McLuhan 1964)- One day we would live in a global village, technology would connect people from everywhere and connect us like we are in a village. Oxymoron, global is big but village is small. Connect with others with same interests. However, he also said if we are interconnected with each other, we have a tribal mentality with in and out group, you scrutinise people and become part of a club, leads to bullying and exclusion, can discriminate. Social media also does this. 1995 we had email, Links to digital natives.
Advantages of living in a global village:
Fandom theory
Can communicate with others from the other side of the world
Can make money easier because more followers for influencers
Different people can collaborate across the world on media products
Can have debates and learn about other opinions
Disadvantages of living in a global village:
Bullying
Fake news, moral panics
Scams and fraud
political disagreements
Fixating on other peoples opinions- Trolling, cyberbullying
Grooming, children can access all services
